Peanut Butter
The peanut butter used in all of our products is made of 100% peanuts. Nothing else. No extra sweeteners, preservatives or anything unnatural. We’ve packed our peanut butter with so much pea-nuttyness that we have trouble getting the lid on the jar! For your pup, this means that he’s getting a great source of all-natural protein, a must for every dog’s diet.
But that’s not near the end of it. Peanut Butter is also a great source of Vitamin E – which is beneficial to preventing diseases. And if that wasn’t enough for you, your dog will be jumping heads over tails for this. Peanut Butter is a super source for Biotin (Vitamin H), which is said to be helpful for thin, splitting nails and good for the coat. So, if your pooch’s pelt is lacking in luster, the naturally occurring oils found in peanut butter will have him looking like a million barks.
Carob
How could you not love chocolate? We’d all love to share that amazing taste with our dogs but we can’t, until now. Carob is a dog-friendly substitute to chocolate. With all the same great sweet richness that makes chocolate a delight to eat. Made from the pods of a Carob Tree, it is 100% natural and 100% healthy for dogs and even gives them some pretty great health benefits.
It contains as much vitamin B1 as asparagus or strawberries, the same amount of niacin as lima beans, lentils or peas, and more vitamin A than eggplant, asparagus and beets. It’s also high in vitamin B2, calcium, magnesium and iron. So next time you’re sitting on the couch treating yourself to some tasty chocolate don’t forget about your canine companion, throw a little Carob his way – you can indulge together.
Canola Oil
All-natural Canola Oil is an increasingly effective way to keep your hounds from gaining pounds. Originally created by our neighbors up North, Canola is a low-fat cooking oil that gives food a nice, clean taste. Food products manufactured with Canola Oil have higher levels of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, and significantly lower levels of saturated and trans fatty acids than more traditional products.
Canola Oil’s unique ratio of almost 2 to 1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 makes it the richest vegetable oil source of essential fatty acids. (In comparison, corn oil is approximately 55 to 1 Omega-6 to Omega-3.) By giving Canola Oil to your canine you can help to increase circulation, reduce joint tenderness and maintain a healthy immune system. Plus, it’s “terrier”ific for maintaining healthy skin and coat. So the next time your pup is licking his chops, unleash the power of Canola!
Wheat
Whole grains like Wheat are rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, protein, dietary minerals (including magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and selenium) and vitamins (including niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin E).
Wheat forms the base of many of our foods for its high nutritional value. Some claim that dogs can be allergic to Wheat. In our research, we’ve found that many times the quality of the Wheat is the culprit – poor quality Wheat that’s been processed and mixed with unnatural preservatives and additives. We use 100% all-natural Wheat, no additives, no preservatives and less allergies!
Brown Rice Flour
Brown rice is higher in protein and fiber than white rice. That is because brown rice is made with whole rice kernels and is high in fiber, vitamins and minerals and it is gluten free. Gluten ingestion is important to dogs with Celiac Disease. This disease inhibits dogs to digest gluten appropriately. When they ingest the protein, an immune reaction takes place in the small intestine, damaging its lining. Though there is no known cure for Celiac Disease, symptoms can be controlled by strict diet modification. We have created wonderful treats for pups with this disease or other wheat or gluten allegies because they deserve tasty treats too!
Oatmeal and Oat Flour
First off, the oatmeal we use here is not the instant kind that comes in the different flavors, these are full of sugar. The real stuff is the plain oat flakes. The benefits of oatmeal are due to the fact that it’s made from oats and oats are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Insoluble fiber has cancer-fighting properties and also makes stools heavier and speeds their passage through the gut, relieving constipation. Soluble fiber breaks down as it passes through the digestive tract, forming a gel that traps some substances related to high cholesterol, thus reducing the absorption of cholesterol into the blood stream. Soluble fiber may also reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good. In addition, Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch. This may be beneficial to your diabetics dogs because, when you slow down the digestion of starch, you avoid the sharp rises in blood sugar levels that usually occur following a meal. The consumption of oats help prevent the development of heart disease and are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium and protein. This is another replacement flour for dogs with a wheat allergy. Obviously we at the Sugar Pup Shop are big fans of oats!
Apples
We love apples, especially how they taste. What they can do for your dog’s health? By including all-natural Apples in our recipes we give your pooch a high level of nutritious flavor.
Apples are high in Vitamin C as well as a host of other antioxidant compounds. The fiber content, while less than in most other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements. Apples also help in controlling cholesterol because they contain no cholesterol and plenty of fiber (which helps reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption).
Eggs
The Egg is jam-packed with enough protein, vitamins and minerals to have your pup running faster than a greyhound (unless you dog is a greyhound. If that’ s the case, it’ll just run even faster!).
The Egg is the greatest source of proteins in existence and provide significant amounts of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. The Egg is also one of the few foods that naturally contains vitamin D. You could say that we love Eggs and so do our four legged cuties!
Milk
Milk is such a great source for so many things like calcium and protein. Our recipes use Milk to provide good, nutritious, all-natural flavor to our oven-baked products – and we think dogs can really taste the difference. With each bite of our baked goods, your canine companion is being fortified with vitamins and minerals that will make him or her happy and healthy.
Milk contains numerous vitamins and minerals like Vitamins D and K, which are essential for bone health. Vitamin B12, potassium, magnesium and riboflavin, which promote cardiovascular health and energy production. Biotin and pantothenic acid are B vitamins that are also important for energy production. Your pup will have loads of energy for hours!
Yogurt
Yogurt is sometimes used as an ingredient in our treats, but is most often used as the base of our frostings and icings. It is an excellent source of protein, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin B 12. When yogurt is compared to milk, yogurt contains more calcium and protein because of the added cultures in the yogurt.
We use low-fat and skim yogurts. They are good for your pets attempting on focusing on a cholesterol lowering diet or just simply watching their weights.
Whey Protein
It’s fuel for your dog. We try to pack it in our food as many ways as we can. That’s why we add Whey Protein as an ingredient. Whey Protein also contains high levels of amino acids, the building blocks to a healthy pooch. Pretty soon your muscle-bound mutt will be taking you for a walk!
Honey
When we create a new recipe that needs just a touch of sweetness we turn to our favorite, all-natural sweetener – Honey. Nothing tastes better than adding a little Honey to your dog’s special treats. To you, Honey may just seem sticky and sweet, but to us, it’s an important part of your dog’s health. Honey is chock-full of vitamins and minerals like B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and zinc.
Vanilla
This is a sweet, all-natural extract! Made from the Vanilla Bean whose sweet aromas are used in aromatherapy, we like to add a quick kiss of Vanilla to make your dog’s treats taste and smell extra special and extra yummy.
Molasses
Molasses is made during the sugar refining process and is commonly used (by us) to sweeten foods. Here’s what people don’t realize, Molasses is great for your dogs. Molasses is a great source for iron, copper, manganese, potassium and magnesium. Molasses may be slow, but your pup won’t be!
Blueberries
Besides tasting great, blueberries are packed with all sorts of things to keep your pup feeling far from blue. Blueberries contain antioxidants, fiber, manganese, Vitamin K and certain compounds found in blueberries have been found to reduce stroke damage in animals. Also, blueberries will help to keep your pup fit because of their ability to lower cholesterol improving and even reversing signs and symptoms of heart disease.
Cranberries
These are red, ripe berries bursting with benefits for your pooch. Cranberries contain powerful antioxidants that benefit the cardiovascular system and immune system. Also, cranberries have been known to reverse the effect of plaque and prevent tooth decay. Did we mention they taste pretty good too?
Cheese and Cream Cheese
Mmmmmm…Cheese! And that is just the way your pet feels. Guess what? In moderation, cheese can be very beneficial to your pups health. Cheese contains a high concentration of essential nutrients, in particular high quality protein and calcium, as well as other nutrients such as phosphorus, zinc, vitamin A, riboflavin, and vitamin B12.
We tend to use reduced fat cheeses so that our pups do not become over weight. Cheese has several other health attributes. It generates health benefits to the digestive and immune systems by keeping the intestinal tracts free from harmful bacteria. Certain cheeses such as Cheddar, Swiss, Monterey Jack among others, have been demonstrated to reduce the risk of dental caries. Milk proteins in cheese have been demonstrated to neutralize plaque acids through their buffering capacity. Cheese appears to prevent acid demineralization and enhance remineralization of tooth enamel. Interestingly enough, to help reduce tooth decay, health professionals recommend eating cheese immediately after meals, or as a between-meal snack.
Carrots
Carrots help maintain good vision and can provide nutrients necessary for energy. Carrots provide tremendous health benefits to dogs. They are a great source of beta-carotene, B vitamins, minerals and trace elements. The result is a stronger immune system, improved skin & coat, and a reduced risk of certain cancers. In addition, Olewo carrots can help stimulate your dogs appetite, stop diarrhea and contain distilled oils that help fight worms and parasites.
Protein
Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Dogs use protein to build and repair tissues. They also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Your pups body is not able to make essential ammeno acids on its own and the only way to make them is by the consumption of protein. We at the Sugar Pup Shop use only the finest organic meats produced without any added antibiotics or added growth hormones to ensure your dog’s consumption of the healthiest proteins.
About White Chocolate
You may notice that white chocolate is a typical ingredient in many treat icing recipes. While chocolate is dangerous for dogs, white chocolate is safe. The reason being, most all the caffeine substance in white chocolate has been removed. White chocolate is primarily cocoa fat, sugar, milk solids, lecithin and vanilla with next to no “chocolate liquor”–the substance hazardous to dogs.
